The 2016 “Telefone ” release from Chicago rapper Fatimah Warner — AKA NONAME — is filled with beauty and individuality.
“Yesterday” has a neat piano accompaniment, very sparkly. The rhinal and pinched rap is always merry. And the arrangement [produced by Noname, Cam O’bi & Phoelix] is incredibly efficient.
“Diddy Bop” ft. Raury & Cam O’bi has speedy rhymes that remind us of Left Eye. Melodious inflections and purring reverberations.
The starry poetry reminds us that Noname is a slam verse champion.
“Bye Bye Baby” has that same chipper nuanced smoothness.
With scoop-scoops of creamy fudge chunks & sour walnuts. Is this nostalgic or does it hint of tragedy avoided?
